Benjamin Ballesteros
Read Benjamin's Story
Benjamin is one of the top boxers for his age and weight in the country in the sport of Muay Thai, a form of kickboxing. Benjamin works on an intense monthly schedule of 3 weeks regular training, one week intensive training followed by a competition. He then takes one week off to recover and focus on school work. Muay Thai has made Benjamin who he is and has taught him to be self-disciplined and strong. While his sport isn't mainstream yet, Benjamin is working hard for the day that he can compete on an international level!
Benjamin not only competes in Muay Thai, he and his father run a martial arts school in Chile. As an international homeschooling student, Benjamin loves that he's able to switch his schedule to what works for him and train during the day. He's also able to obtain an accredited, American diploma and work at an accelerated pace. He credits homeschooling with helping him to become one of the best in his sport and balance academics and his passions. To get a jump start on college, Benjamin is also taking Dual Enrollment courses. Benjamin says he would "strongly recommend Bridgeway to athletes who really wish to pursue their athletic goals because it will definitely help them train more and, at the same time, will provide them with a back-up plan in case their athletic career has to come to an end."
Hannah Cook
Read Hannah's Story
Hannah's love of dance and her drive to excel at school has been evident since she was a child. It wasn't until 2012 that Hannah took her love of dance onto the ice in the sport of Ice Dancing, something she calls "dancing with speed." Soon her parents, coaches, and Hannah herself realized her potential. Currently Hannah trains for 6-8 hours a day almost 7 days a week, completing her school work in the evening and on the drive to and from the rink. She and her partner have eyes on the Olympics. The Cooks were a committed homeschooling family even before Hannah's life became consumed with her time in the rink, but Karen, Hannah's mother, knew they needed more because Hannah has other aspirations as well as the Olympics. She dreams of getting a degree an elite university and pursuing a career in law after her career on the ice is over, an aspiration that requires a top notch education, strong grades, and accredited transcript.
They turned to Bridgeway and have never looked back. Bridgeway gives Hannah accreditation, more flexibility, and more options within homeschooling allowing her to excel academically while she chased her Ice Dancing dreams. And Karen has found the homeschooling support she needs with her Academic Advisors. Bridgeway has been the "combination of flexibility and services we needed for Hannah" and they are so thankful to be able to support Hannah as she walks through the doors that God opens for her in Ice Dancing and academics. Not only did Hannah gain the flexibility and accreditation she needed, but she's being prepared for her future beyond the ice. "We feel fully prepared for Hannah's future educational and career goals while all of her time and energy can go towards training every day for the Olympics."
Maria Barend
Read Maria's Story
Growing up in a surfing family, it was only natural that Maria would fall in love with the sport. She loves the feeling she gets when the world disappears as she's concentrating on catching a wave and riding it to the best of her ability. Though she's been surfing since she was a young child, Maria only began competing a few years ago and has quickly excelled in the ranks of the competitive surfing world and holds the number 1 spot for females in the Eastern Surfing Association for the NorthEast region. This year Maria will be competing in nationals and dreams of making the USA Surf Team. Surfing makes Maria "believe that anything is possible."
The Barends have been committed homeschoolers since Maria was in Kindergarten having lived in Hawaii where public schools are some of the worst in the nation. But, when Ana, Maria's mother, took a position with the Women's World Tour of Surfing, she didn't have the time to devote to the hands on learning and other demands that homeschooling can put on those who go it alone. Finding Bridgeway has been a relief for their entire family. Surfing demands a flexible schedule and extensive travel to chase the best waves and brightest sun. Bridgeway has given Maria the flexibility and support she needs to chase waves when the weather's right and grow academically despite her demanding schedule and struggle with dyslexia. The curriculum Maria uses with her Bridgeway program raises the bar academically and supports her learning disability, which helps Maria to be more disciplined and focused. And her Academic Advisor takes care of the records and transcripts so that Ana can focus on her work and championing her daughter. This type of discipline, Ana Barend says, is what Maria will need in her life beyond surfing, and an added benefit that they've discovered working with Bridgeway Academy.
